Sophia AI presents a live demo of its Greek-language LLM suite, including text generation, image/video creation, voice, and research agents. Emphasizes technological, linguistic, and data sovereignty with EU-compliant servers and curated Greek datasets.

The Case for Digital Sovereignty in AI

Global AI giants dominate the market, but their models often fail to capture local cultural, legal, and linguistic nuances. In Greece, this mismatch results in a mere 9.81% adoption rate (18th in the EU). Beyond poor user experience, reliance on foreign infrastructure creates risks of data sovereignty erosion and potential legal non-compliance under GDPR and the EU AI Act.

Sophia AI’s suite of Greek-language LLMs addresses these gaps directly. The mission is to deliver a full AI stack that enables sovereign execution of tasks — capabilities that otherwise remain available only in English.

The Three Pillars of Sovereignty

Sophia AI’s approach rests on three sovereignty pillars:

  • Technological sovereignty — full control over the model, security, and infrastructure.
  • Linguistic sovereignty — training on curated, high-quality Greek datasets (not mere translations) to capture authentic language use.
  • Data sovereignty — all servers located in Greece under EU jurisdiction, ensuring compliance with GDPR and the AI Act.

The Model Family

Sophia AI deploys a range of models for different use cases:

Text generation:

  • W series (all-around chat): W2 small (7B parameters) and W2 large (235M parameters). Both are multimodal and non-reasoning.
  • K series (reasoning): K1 small (32B) and K2 large (80B).

Creative suite:

  • Image generation: Sophia I1 (small, strong) and Sophia I2 (image editing).
  • Video generation: Sophia V1 (30 fps, 10-second clips). A demonstration shows animation generated from a single static frame.

Voice:

  • ASR model achieves a 7.08% word error rate in Greek — the lowest reported for Greek speech recognition.
  • DTS model produces authentic Greek speech synthesis.

Research agent:

  • Sophia Research is a long-horizon information-seeking agent that iteratively searches the web, collects sources, summarizes, and cites them, minimizing hallucinations.

Capabilities in Practice

The following tasks demonstrate the suite’s breadth:

  • Text analysis: A research paper (by Yann LeCun) is processed to produce an executive summary, key contributions, methodology, results, and limitations.
  • Image generation: A prompt describing the Acropolis Museum with specific lens instructions yields an output that follows the given paradigm.
  • Image editing: Using Sophia I2 on the generated image, a request to change the sky to sunset produces accurate orange tones.
  • Video generation: Provided an initial frame, Sophia V1 animates it into a short clip.
  • Research agent: A query about green energy investments in northern Greece over three years triggers multi-round web searches, reflection, summarization, and a final report with citations.

Training and Benchmarks

Sophia AI’s models undergo multi-stage training:

  • Continuous pretraining (CPT) on 14 billion Greek tokens.
  • Supervised fine-tuning (SFT) on 17 million samples.

On benchmarks, Sophia models outperform other open-source Greek-language models by at least 50% (with the Sophia K2 model showing the largest margin).

Safety is handled through guardrails (Guard) on both input and output to ensure compliance with regulations.

Commercial Offerings and Upcoming Products

Sophia AI is available through two tiers:

  • Plus — includes a free trial via QR code.
  • Pro — includes a one-week trial. All models are available across both tiers; usage limits vary. For businesses, the platform guarantees 100% data and infrastructure sovereignty.

Upcoming products include:

  • MCP (Model Context Protocol) — connects to email, calendar, and external apps, enabling actions such as sending emails or joining calls directly from the chat interface.
  • RAG solution — end-to-end retrieval-augmented generation for enterprises, connecting to internal wikis and data repositories for closed-loop Q&A.
  • Sophia Meet — attends Microsoft Teams meetings, providing live insight analysis and post-meeting reports. Support for more platforms is planned.

The concepts covered here are best seen in practice. The video goes through each step in detail and is worth watching to fully appreciate how the models behave and how the sovereignty guarantees are implemented.
